MHS Theatre has announced its schedule for the 2020-21 season, and will once again offer five separate productions, although each will be available virtually as opposed to in-person.
The 2020-21 season is entitled Out of Chaos, recognizing the importance of artistic expression during these challenging times. The season is inspired by a quote from Stephen Sondheim, "Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.''
The season will include the following virtual performances:
- Nov. 13: War of the Worlds
- Dec. 4: Teenagers from Outer Space
- Dec. 11: Shakespeare 2020 -- Mis-shapen Chaos of Well-Seeming Forms
- Dec. 17: 20/20 Vision -- Performances of Original Student Work
- March 18-21, 2021: Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella
The first four productions will be available for viewing online by audiences indefinitely. Cinderella is a multi-day virtual ticketed performance.
The original War of the Worlds was a radio broadcast by Orson Welles in 1938 based on the science fiction novel by H.G. Wells about an alien invasion that terrified the nation.
Teenagers from Outer Space was a 1959 B-movie that was a staple at drive-in theaters for years. A young alien falls for a pretty teenage girl from Earth and they team up to stop the plans of his invading cohorts, who intend to use the planet as a food-breeding ground for giant lobsters from their planet. The invaders, who arrive in a flying saucer, carry deadly ray guns that turn humans into skeletons.
Shakespeare 2020 -- Mis-shapen Chaos of Well-Seeming Forms will include selections from the English playwright's work that center around the theme of chaos.
20/20 Vision -- Performances of Original Student Work will include videos of 1-10 minutes in length from MHS students. The composite video will highlight what students saw, heard, learned and discovered during this most unique year.
Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella was written for television in 1957 and starred Julie Andrews and was also played on stage.
MHS Theatre is also looking for a presenting sponsor for Cinderella as well as sponsors for the other four productions.
