To know him is to love him. That’s what Park Elementary School’s students, staff and families will tell you about Rodney Esser – affectionately known as Mr. Peanuts – who has been the school’s beloved custodian for 60 years.

“Peanuts played an essential role in shaping the identity of Park Elementary,” said Principal Brett Humphrey. “Peanuts has been at the heart of Park Elementary, shaping our school’s culture and strengthening our sense of community. Through music, mentorship, and a spirit of kindness, Peanuts has created an environment where everyone feels welcome. His presence has fostered connections among students, staff, and families, making Park a place where people don’t just learn – they belong.”

“I have yet to connect with a child who didn’t smile after a high five or a hug and feel good about themselves,” Mr. Peanuts said.

peanutsMr. Peanuts has earned countless accolades during his decades of service to the school. He was a finalist in a national Custodian of the Year contest as well as recognized for his outstanding service at the Midwest Facility Masters Convention in the Wisconsin Dells. But Peanuts isn’t about being in the spotlight.

“I love what I do and I want to pass on the kindness to others I received,” Mr. Peanuts said. “The success of Park School revolves around the remarkable staff with their attitude of ‘I love what I do.’ The kids, the staff and the families are a blessing to me.”

Giving back will be the focus of an April 26 concert headlined by musician Mollie B – a close friend of Mr. Peanuts – at Middleton High School’s Performing Arts Center. The concert is being held in his honor, and it’s a fundraiser for the MCPASD Education Foundation.

“I’m delighted to say I’ve known and have worked with Mollie B, Ted Lange and the entire Busta family on and off the stage,” Mr. Peanuts said. “I want only the best for my 60-year celebration at the Performing Arts Center in Middleton High School.”

students“The upcoming concert with Mollie B is more than just a musical event; it’s a celebration of Peanuts and everything he has given to Park,” Mr. Humphrey said. “It’s an opportunity to come together as a school and community, to share in the joy that Peanuts has always brought us, and to create new memories in his honor. Most of all, it’s a chance to say thank you in the way Peanuts would love most – through music, laughter, and togetherness.”

Admission to the concert is free, though VIP tickets are available and donations are welcome in support of the fundraising efforts.
