Pope Farm Elementary School Teacher Christine Davis set up a hydroponic vertical garden to engage kindergarten through fourth grade students in STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and math – learning.
The innovative gardening system requires no soil and uses a water-based method to keep plants hydrated and thriving. Fourth graders Carlos De Leon and Ishitha Sigamala joined their teacher to share what they’re learning with Spectrum News.
They explained how students are growing lettuce, green onions, collard greens, basil and cilantro and sharing the vegetables and herbs with the school’s cafeteria for the salad bar. They’re learning about healthy eating as well as gaining science and engineering skills as they test different variables on the growing process.
