MCPASD Celebrates Pride by Highlighting Students from Kromrey’s GLAM Club

In recognition of Pride Month, we're taking a moment to reflect on the impactful role of inclusivity clubs such as Kromrey Middle School’s GLAM (Gay, Lesbian, and More). GLAM clubs provide a supportive community for students, ensuring that voices like those of Beatrix Olejniczak and Aubrey Montemayor are heard and celebrated. These two students took a proud stand this year by raising the Pride flag at our District Services Center, symbolizing the inclusivity that GLAM represents.

The communications team had the chance to sit down with Beatrix and Aubrey to get their insights on the activities and experiences within the club. They spoke about how GLAM hosts everything from friendly hangouts to educational outings, with trips to places like the UW-Madison LGBTQ+ Center offering a glimpse into the wider LGBTQ+ community.

Beatrix commented, "These trips help us see that we're part of a larger community, and that's really comforting." Aubrey added, "Exactly. It’s a great way to find friends who really get you."

The commitment by staff members such as Joe Bins, Dr. Irene Ann Resenly, and Julie Carbon to create an inclusive space within the school is paramount to the success of GLAM. Through their efforts, students in the club have been able to make deeper connections and explore their identities in a supportive setting.

"It's the little things teachers do that make a big difference," said Beatrix, appreciative of the support. Reflecting on the impact of GLAM, Aubrey said, "The club is like a bridge to a future where you feel accepted and happy."

Members of GLAM have ambitions to promote inclusivity throughout the school by suggesting policy changes to better support LGBTQ+ students. "We believe everyone can take small, yet powerful, steps to create a welcoming atmosphere," Beatrix pointed out. "Every respectful gesture counts," agreed Aubrey.

The students are keen on district-wide efforts to enhance support for LGBTQ+ students. They suggest starting with the recognition of preferred names and pronouns as a basic yet significant act. Beatrix and Aubrey invite their peers to come and see what GLAM is about—highlighting that it's a space where everyone can belong and contribute to understanding each other.

So, during Pride Month, let's acknowledge the critical role clubs like GLAM play in schools. Through their endeavors, they champion the fundamental rights of students to be themselves, fostering a school climate built on kindness, respect, and equality.
