Assistant State Superintendent Duy Nguyen spent the first day of school visiting his old roots. Nguyen was the former principal of Northside Elementary for three years before accepting a position on State Superintendent Jill Underly's leadership team.
Nguyen toured Sauk Trail Elementary, Kromrey Middle and Middleton High School with MCPASD Superintendent Dr. Dana Monogue.
Nguyen learned about our two-way immersion program (TWI) at Sauk Trail and how our district has prioritized bilingualism for our students.
Since 2017, the MCPASD has offered TWI at Sauk Trail Elementary School. Students in the TWI program are working toward high levels of bilingualism and biliteracy, academic achievement, and sociocultural competency in Spanish and English. In the 2021-2022 school year, 179 students were enrolled in the TWI program from kindergarten through fourth grade.
The next stop was Kromrey Middle School, where Nguyen visited his former students from Northside. Staff updated Nguyen on the TWI program's expansion to 5th graders at Kromrey Middle School this school year.
The last stop was Middleton High School, the first time Nguyen toured the building with all the new renovations complete. Engineering & Manufacturing teacher, Eric Wheeler, spoke about the new space and how this new engineering area will help students explore and experience various types of engineering and design through project-based learning. Students will also work with industry-level machines and equipment, including Tormach CNC mills and lathes, Fanuc robotic arm, and Form Labs 3D printers.
Nguyen also spent time talking with the high school administration team, including MHS Principal Peg Shoemaker.
Thank you Assistant State Superintendent Duy Nguyen for spending the first day of school with our students and staff!
