7:20 - The Board of Education meeting started with the Superintendent's report. Dr. Dana Monogue expressed appreciation to every custodian and member of the facilities/maintenance team for their exceptional efforts during the summer to ensure our buildings are in excellent condition for the new academic year.

The dedication and skill of the custodial and maintenance staff significantly enhance the daily experiences of our students and staff within the district.


9:09 - Director of Special Education Cindy Malcheski presented the 2023-2024 seclusion and restraint annual report to the Board of Education, as required by Wisconsin law. The report outlines the district's use of physical restraint and seclusion, emphasizing these measures are only used as a last resort for student safety.

The district provides Crisis Prevention Institute's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training to staff, focusing on de-escalation techniques and behavior management strategies. This year saw multiple training sessions with updated, trauma-informed approaches.

While incident numbers remain similar to last year, the data now includes alternative placement sites. Malcheski stressed the district's commitment to social-emotional learning and creating a sense of belonging for all students.

The report underscores the district's dedication to balancing safety with minimizing restrictive interventions, reflecting its ongoing effort to support diverse student needs in a nurturing environment.


14:53 - Athletic Director Jamie Sims and Assistant Athletic Director/Activities Coordinator Brad Crandell reviewed the 2023-2024 school year for athletics and activities at Middleton High School and Clark Street Community School. The district had a good year, winning several state championships.

The department added new programs at the middle school level and worked on increasing opportunities for all student groups. They introduced adaptive sports leagues, started planning for a Hall of Fame, and continued efforts on equity and leadership development.Many teams and students received academic honors. School clubs also did well in various competitions.

Going forward, the department plans to focus on improving engagement and access for all students. The report shows a positive year for athletics and activities, with attention to both performance and inclusion.


1:00: 06 - The District's Communications Team, led by Director Shannon Valladolid, presented an overview of their work for the 2023-2024 school year, highlighting their efforts in communications, public relations, interpretation, and translation services. The six-member team focused on three primary areas: strengthening district-community relations, enhancing language accessibility, and improving front desk operations.

The team’s communication strategies encompassed print and digital materials, video productions, and event management, from new family welcome packets to major events like the grand opening of the high school stadium. Their work also involved expanding interpretation and translation services to meet the growing demand for Spanish language support, cutting translation turnaround times significantly.

Additionally, they improved front desk operations by hiring a bilingual receptionist, enhancing their ability to assist Spanish-speaking families. Notably, the team launched initiatives like a successful athletics podcast while further boosting their social media engagement and community partnerships.

Looking forward, the Communications Team remains committed to inclusive communication, process improvements, and fostering a more connected and informed district community.


1:41:02 - Assistant Superintendent Jerrud Rossing provided an update on enrollment, noting a modest increase. Since the last meeting on August 12th, the district has seen an addition of 18 students, including 5 resident students and 13 open enrolled students.

Comparing this to last year's third Friday report, which showed 7,042 students, the current enrollment stands at 7,187, with a significant portion being open enrolled students. Overall, class sizes are looking healthy.


1:48:10 - The Board of Education approved two items, which included:

  • The agenda and resolutions for the Annual Meeting scheduled for September 16, 2024.

  • An agreement between the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District and the Sun Prairie School District for sharing a physical therapist during the 2024-2025 school year. This agreement outlines the terms and costs associated with the position.
