Here at MCPASD, we are proud to have amazing and talented school bus drivers who provide a positive experience to our students every day. They are the first hello and last goodbye, one of the most vital positions in our district.
With this week being National Wisconsin School Bus Driver Appreciation Week, we wanted you to meet some of the drivers behind the wheel.
Raye LaFave has been an MCPASD bus driver for the past eight years. She drives routes for Pope Farm Elementary, Glacier Creek, and Primrose School of Middleton.
Not only does she drive routes, but Raye also trains new bus drivers. But did you know that Raye served our country for almost six years?
"I'm a navy veteran, and I have a degree from UW Madison," said LaFave.
She was stationed in Wales, UK, Pearl Harbor, HI, and Whidbey Island, WA.
Raye was an Ocean System Technician Analyst (OTA). They detected, identified, localized, and tracked foreign and domestic submarines.
Now, she serves our students. Making sure they have a safe and positive experience when they hop on an MCPASD bus.
"I greet everyone with a good morning, and when they get off the bus, I tell them to have a great rest of their day and a great weekend," she said. "I always make sure to speak to each student as they get on and off the bus."
Raye says the flexibility of this job and the benefits MCPASD offers are unmatched. She has two high school students at Middleton High School and loves having the same vacations as them, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, Spring Break, and the summer.
"My favorite benefits would be the 401K Match, they match 6 percent, and I have the option of health insurance," she said. "Also, just being part of the school system which is the state Wisconsin Retirement System."
And lastly, Raye loves the MCPASD bus barn, a temperature-controlled room that stores all our buses.
"We have indoor parking for our buses, which many places don't have," she said. "I've heard a lot of places do have outdoor parking, so you have to warm your bus up and scrape off the snow."
