Students benefit from summer program

A number of Sunset Ridge students had the opportunity to work on their reading and math skills over the summer with four staff members.

Jessica Block, Kathy Farrell, Elsa Morrick and Lynn Nicklas met on a weekly basis with anywhere from 6 to 15 students in the English Language Learners program.

The students read and played math games to keep their skills sharp and avoid the summer slide, Morrick said. The program ended with a field trip to the UW-Madison campus, including a walking tour that included a stop at Bascom Hill, a visit to the Memorial Union and a visit to Camp Randall Stadium.

Morick said this is the sixth year the program has been offered.

"We started with the intention to keep children motivated to continue learning, reading and staying connected throughout the summer months,'' she said. "It has built positive connections among staff, parents and students.

"The reaction of the children and parents has been great! The children continue to come and meet with us on a weekly basis and the parents are always very thankful that we're taking the time to do this during the summer break.''
