Applications are now being accepted the Weekend Food Program, which is free to all students in the District's six elementary schools and this year will expand to Glacier Creek and the Middleton Youth Center, which Kromrey students can attend after school.
The program provides healthy snacks and some small, easy to prepare, meals for children on Fridays during much of the school year. Food is sent home with children in bags. The first day for the 2019-20 school year is Thursday, Oct. 3 because there is no school for students on Oct. 4.
More than 140 MCPASD elementary students participated last year and approximately 160 students participated in 2017-18. The program is voluntary and participation information is confidential. To be eligible, families must complete a form and return it to the social worker at their child's school by Sept. 20.
This effort is once again being spearheaded by local churches, Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) and District social workers. The MCPASD Education Foundation has raised more than $15,000 for the program over the past two years.
The program was implemented three years ago at Elm Lawn and Sauk Trail, but the goal was to expand it to all six elementary schools in 2017-18, Director of Communications Perry Hibner said. Park and Northside were added to the program when it started for the school year in mid-October. The program began at Sunset Ridge in mid-November and West Middleton joined in early January.
Representatives from the churches and MOM, along with school social workers, have met multiple times over the past couple of years to coordinate efforts, Hibner said. Food safety, the weight of each bag being sent home and the types of items included have been among the items discussed, Hibner said.
Much of the food comes from the Second Harvest Foodbank of Wisconsin.
