Gear up for Summer Reading

Printer-friendly version

Summer is just around the corner and while you are gearing up for fun at the pool, on the baseball diamond, and planning family vacations, it is important to be thinking about the role reading should have in your summer plans. Reading is like training for a marathon. It requires daily practice, which includes over the summer months. It is imperative that children continue to read over the months away from school.  Experts agree that students who fail to read over the summer regress in their reading, whereas children who continue to read maintain and improve their reading abilities!

Summer is a busy time for children and families, but it’s important to make reading a part of your daily routine. Choose a consistent time for reading and try to stick to this each day. Choose a time that will be less likely to be interrupted, such as after breakfast or before bed.

I hope that your summer plans include fun and relaxation, but also that reading will play an important role in your daily routine.  Students can start their summer off right by participating in the Park School Book Swap: Wednesday, June 5th.  Bring your gently used books to school on the Wednesday and swap them for new summer reads!
