Season 2, Episode 5 | March Madness: Marching to the Beat

In the March Madness edition of Beyond the Scoreboard, Athletic Director Jamie Sims and Assistant AD Brad Crandell learn ways that Middleton High School student-athletes and UW–Madison band leaders are marching ahead into spring and long-term success. Guests in this episode share great insights on their professional and athletic careers, activities and hopes for the future:

  • Dr. Corey Pompey, Associate Director of Bands at UW–Madison, talks about his six years as Associate Director and as the Director of Athletic Bands. He oversees the marching band, teaches conducting classes and conducts the concert band. Dr. Pompey wants to expand the music department’s connections with local high schools and communities. Some of his other career highlights include meeting well-known figures in the music world and traveling to the Rose Bowl. (Interview at 00:46)

  • Caden Van Buren and Sam Wolf, members of the Boys Swim and Dive Team, dive into the feelings of becoming State Champions for the third year in a row. They share what it takes to be strong competitors and what sets their team apart from others in Wisconsin. This includes consistency, hard work, diversity, and mentorship among team members.   • Rita Vavilov, member of the Girls Ski Team, reflects on the growth of the team as she prepares to graduate. She shares her personal highlights from the season, including going to State. Rita also shares the importance of teamwork in a seemingly individual sport and gives advice to future Ski Team members. (Interview at 23:07)

  • Trey Goldberg and Noah Holzheimer, members of the Esports Team, break down misconceptions about E-Sports and share how the team has grown. The team competes in the larger Wisconsin E-Sports Association. Leaders also hope the team continues growing as a place where everyone can have fun and feel a sense of belonging.
