Fun Run

“Mr. Craney, I never thought I could run that far!”

The proud exclamation was from a first grade student after the Northside Run. Walk. Move. Event. On a beautiful Fall morning in 2015, all Northside students and teachers ran, walked, moved and smiled their way around the Northside track reinforcing the idea that physical activity is fun and feels good.

The event was so exhilarating for the students, staff and volunteers that it became clear that this should be annual Northside tradition!  "It was great opportunity for all kids. It was a celebration,'' said Superintendent Don Johnson (retired), who attended the event.

The idea of a “fun run” during the school day at Northside was suggested by a Northside teacher as a way to promote exercise in a positive way because “active kids do better.” Recognizing that happy, healthy kids and classrooms leads to a more successful learning environment is a key focus of PTO Wellness Committee efforts in planning active school events. If the Run. Walk. Move. success can be measured through smiles, laughs and proud faces then the goal was achieved!

One of the components of the 2015 Run. Walk. Move. Event was as a fundraiser with the money raised going directly back to Northside teachers and classrooms. All teachers and support staff received stipends to pay for items to support active, healthy and mindful classrooms.

The amazing Northside teachers used the Run. Walk. Move. funds to purchase items such as desk pedals, strength and stretch instruction, standing desks, balancing chairs and fitness guides to create active classroom environments. Research has indicated that active students are ready to learn and physical activity for students helps self esteem, mood and overall school performance.

Planning is underway for the 2nd Annual Northside Run. Walk. Move. Event on Friday October 14  Please consider volunteering or attending the Event to cheer on the Northside students and staff!
