Five District fourth-grade students had their respective Haikus recognized by the Greater Dane County Advanced Learners Network.

Elm Lawn's Erika Eichhoff, Honora Tsipotou, and Hannah Waldren, Northside's Taylor Samuelson, and West Middleton's Garrett Mlsna had their Haikus selected. They were among 1,100 students, including 152 from the District, who submitted poems as part of a fourth-grade contest.

The five students will take part in a virtual recognition ceremony the last week of April.

A Haiku is a type of short-form poetry originally from Japan. Traditional Japanese Haiku consist of three phrases that contain a kireji, or "cutting word", 17 on in a 5-7-5 pattern, and a kigo, or seasonal reference.
