Duy Nguyen has been named the new principal at Northside Elementary School, Superintendent George Mavroulis announced on Friday, June 8.
The Board of Education is expected to approve the hiring at the regular meeting on Monday, June 11.
Nguyen has spent the past two years as principal at Hawthorne LAB School in Waukesha. He replaces Roz Craney, who announced earlier in the spring that he was leaving after nine years to become principal at Yahara Elementary in DeForest, which is where his family lives.
"I take great responsibility to ensure that all students at Northside are safe, motivated to learn, and inspired to become model citizens,'' Nguyen said. "Northside has a fantastic staff who care about students and work tirelessly to build on their strengths to attain social and academic growth.''
He has worked 12 years as a teacher in kindergarten, first and second grade. He also served as a learning coordinator at a Madison elementary school.
He also has spent several summers teaching middle and high school students in China. He was a librarian in Ecuador before heading to New York City to do graduate work at Teachers College at Columbia University.
He has a bachelor's degree from UW-Madison and master's degrees from Teachers College and UW-Madison.
Director of Elementary Education Rainey Briggs said 25 people applied for the Northside principal position. Eight were interviewed and three were brought in for a second round of interviews.
