MHS was ranked the No. 1 high school in Dane County and the 11th best high school out of approximately 540 in Wisconsin by U.S. News & World Report, according to a story posted on their website recently.
U.S. News reviewed nearly 18,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The only other high schools in Dane County ranked in the top 20 were Waunakee (13th) and Madison West (17th). The other Dane County high schools to be ranked in the top 50 were Madison Memorial (28th), Verona (31st), Monona Grove (41st), Mount Horeb (45th), Sun Prairie (46th), and Belleville (49th).
MHS was ranked 523rd in the nation. MHS had a 97.07 ranking overall. It was lauded for its 96 percent graduation rate and noted that 55 percent of all students took at least one Advanced Placement exam and 47 percent passed at least one AP exam.
According to the rankings, the top Wisconsin high school was Kettle Moraine Health Sciences, while Whitefish Bay was No. 2.
MHS has been a fixture among the top high schools in Wisconsin. MHS was 14th in 2020, 10th in 2019, 12th in 2018 and ninth overall in Wisconsin in 2017, when it was also the top high school ranked in Dane County and the Big Eight Conference. MHS was ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin by U.S. News & World Report in 2014.
"We don't chase awards and accolades but it is nice to acknowledge them,'' District Communications Director Perry Hibner said. "It's special that this was announced during Teacher Appreciation Week as these honors wouldn't be possible without the great work of our staff and administration at MHS and the support of our families.
"It takes everyone to make a great school and we certainly realize the hard work done by all of our elementary and middle school staff and the role they play in this award.''
