MHS was ranked the No. 2 high school in Dane County and the 14th best high school out of more than 550 in Wisconsin by U.S. News & World Report, according to a story posted on their website recently.
U.S. News reviewed nearly 18,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The only other high school in Dane County ranked in the top 20 was Waunakee (10th). The other Dane County high schools to be ranked in the top 50 were Madison Memorial (21st), Mount Horeb (22nd), Verona (26th), Madison West (33rd), Monona Grove (35th), Lodi (38th), McFarland (42nd) and Sun Prairie (46th).
MHS was ranked 633rd in the nation. MHS had a 96.44 ranking overall. It was lauded for its 97 percent graduation rate and noted that 57 percent of all students took at least one Advanced Placement exam.
According to the rankings, the top Wisconsin High School was Whitefish Bay, while Cedarburg was No. 2.
MHS has been a fixture among the top high schools in Wisconsin. MHS was 10th in 2019, 12th in 2018 and ninth overall in Wisconsin in 2017, when it was also the top high school ranked in Dane County and the Big Eight Conference. MHS was ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin by U.S. News & World Report in 2014.
"We don't chase awards and accolades but it is nice to acknowledge them,'' District Communications Director Perry Hiber said. "These honors wouldn't be possible without the great work of our staff and administration at MHS and the support of our families.
"It takes everyone to make a great school and we certainly realize the hard work done by all of our elementary and middle school staff and the role they play in this award.''
