Nearly 300 students from throughout the area gathered on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the 10th annual Madison Area Model United Nations Conference (MADMUN), hosted this year by the MHS Model UN at Kromrey.
The event included students from Middleton, McFarland, Monona Grove, Oregon, Madison West, Baraboo, Monroe, Edgewood, Verona, Lake Mills, and Milwaukee Marquette University.
Nine MHS students helped to develop and run this year’s MADMUN. This year’s Secretary-General, MHS senior Lili McGuffey, assumed leadership over the entire event.
Student participants represented many different countries and positions in committees including the General Assembly, European Union, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, US Senate, Security Council, Google Board of Directors, and the 1989 U.S. and USSR cabinets. Delegates for MHS’s Model United Nations club discussed a variety of issues such as climate change, business regulation, cyber security, racial inequality, and much more.
Students also enjoyed hearing keynote speaker Tony Calabrese discuss his experiences serving as a Model UN advisor for 25 years in Singapore, South Korea, Argentina, and Hungary. Calabrese is also an Emeritus Advisory Board member of The Hague MUN—the world’s oldest and largest MUN.
The MHS Model UN will participate next at the Chicago International Model United Nations Conference (CIMUN) on Dec. 5-8, followed by a trip to participate in the Notre Dame Model United Nations Conference in late January.
The MHS Model UN meets every Monday after school from 4 to 5 p.m. in the CLC and new members are welcome to join at any point during the year. If you are interested in more information, please e-mail club advisors Ms. Azkoul or Ms. Sipiorski.
