The MHS dance team placed fourth in D1 Hip Hop at the Wisconsin Association of Cheer/Pom Coaches State Dance Championships on Saturday, Feb. 2 in La Crosse.
Twelve teams qualified for the state meet in D1 Hip Hop and the top five were recognized. It is the MHS dance team's first top-five performance at state since placing fourth in D1 Hip Hop in 2015. The Cardinals also placed third in D1 Hip Hop in 2014.
MHS qualified for the state championships by placing third in the Southern Regional Championship at Watertown High School on Jan. 26. It is the sixth year in a row MHS has qualified for state in hip hip. It was also their highest regional finish since 2015.
This year's team included juniors Payton Giles, Cece Lindblom, and Hannah Statz; sophomores Avery Collien, Julia Connell, Anna Coyne, Paige Powers, Morgan Sabol, Sadie Schreier-Jacobson, Kayla Stoecker, and Haley Sweeney; and freshmen Katy Bouril, Lexi Lund, Ashlyn Roush, and Josie Whitford. Jackie Jaucian is in her seventh year as coach, while assistant Ana Hursh is in her fifth year.
"We are a very young and inexperienced team,'' said Jaucian, who added six of the 15 performers are in their first year in the program. "It is very difficult to make it to state, and with our young team we knew it would be tough. The girls worked so hard all year.
"After they danced at state we were just so proud. Every single thing we worked so hard for happened. Every trick hit, the formations hit, the routine was clean, and the energy was out of this world. ... It goes to show that commitment, dedication, and hard work goes a long way.''
