The MHS bands will present their series of Spring Concerts on Wednesday, May 9 and Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. And for the second year, they will also present a Percussion Concert on Saturday, May 12 at 7 p.m.
On May 9, the concert will include the Cardinal Band and Concert Band Block 1. The Cardinal Band will be performing John Mackey's "Undertow," a loud and driving piece in a challenging 7/8+4/4 time signature. The Concert Band's performance will include Johan de Meij's "Aquarium," a colorful large-scale thematic work for wind orchestra.
On May 10, the concert will feature performances by the Concert Band Block 2 and the Wind Ensemble. Both groups will perform a mix of modern and traditional band music, highlighted by the Wind Ensemble's performances of Percy Grainger's classic "Lincolnshire Posy" and Frank Ticheli's "An American Elegy," a piece commissioned in 2000 for Columbine High School. The Concert Band will present classic works by Fucik and Copland, along with Ticheli's "San Antonio Dances." There will also be a tribute to the Senior Class of 2018.
On May 12, MHS percussion students will perform a variety of percussion music that they have prepared throughout second semester including large ensembles, chamber and solo works, as well as original compositions by students. Please consider joining us for this unique event.
All three concerts are free to the public and will be held in the Performing Arts Center. A reception will follow the evening concernts on May 9 and 10.
