Lots to celebrate in Niche rankings

Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District and its schools once again scored exceptionally high in the Niche.com 2020 rankings that were released earlier in August of the best public schools in Wisconsin.

MHS was ranked No. 1 out of all public high schools in the Madison area, while Kromrey (first) and Glacier Creek (fourth) were among the top public middle schools in the Madison area. All six MCPASD elementary schools -- Sunset Ridge (first), Northside (second), Elm Lawn (third), Sauk Trail (fifth), West Middleton (sixth) and Park (10th) finished in the top 10 in the Madison area.

"It's important that we celebrate our successes while also acknowledging there is more work to be done,'' Director of Communications Perry Hibner said. "We know we must address the achievement and opportunity gap that exists for our marginalized students and families. We want to constantly get better and make sure every student in our District feels welcome, supported and inspired.''

MHS was ranked fifth out of more than 550 high schools considered in Wisconsin. The other Dane County high schools to be ranked in the top 20 were Madison West (sixth), Madison Memorial (seventh), Waunakee (13th) and Verona (17th). Sun Prairie was ranked 21st.

Whitefish Bay was ranked the No. 1 high school in the state.

MHS was also ranked the second-best high school in Wisconsin for STEM  (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) offerings.

It was the fourth consecutive year MHS has been ranked sixth among all public high schools in Wisconsin. MHS has been ranked in the top 10 every since year 2014, including being named the top public high school in the state in 2014.

MCPASD was ranked fourth among all districts in Wisconsin and No. 1 in Dane County. The only other districts to rank in the top 50 in Dane County were Waunakee (seventh), Monona Grove (17th), Oregon (30th), Sun Prairie (32nd), Verona (37th), and Mount Horeb (44th) and Verona.

MCPASD has placed in the top 10 every year since Niche.com started releasing the rankings in 2014. The District received A+ marks in academics, clubs and activities, teachers, and college prep.It ranked 17th out of nearly 380 public schools in Wisconsin for best places to teach. It also ranked third in the state out of nearly 370 school districts in athletics.

Kromrey was ranked the third-best public middle school in Wisconsin behind Pilgrim Park and Wisconsin Hills, which are each in the Elmbrook School District. Glacier Creek was ranked 19th in the state. The only other Dane County middle schools ranked in the top 50 were Waunakee Intermediate School (seventh) and Waunakee Intermediate (17th). There were nearly 600 Wisconsin middle schools considered in the rankings.

Sunset Ridge was also ranked the third-best public elementary school in Wisconsin behind Brookfield and Tonawanda, which are each in the Elmbrook School District. Northside was ranked eighth, Elm Lawn 10th, Sauk Trail 27th, West Middleton 44th and Park 68th in the state rankings.

The only other Dane County elementary schools to rank in the top 70 were Arboretum (14th), Heritage (45th) and Prairie (52nd) in Waunakee, Shorewood Hills (53rd) in Madison Metropolitan, and Winnequah (70th) in Monona Grove.

In all, more than 1,200 elementary schools in Wisconsin were considered.
