Chris Michaud and Kim Frerichs of Eppstein Uhen Architects provided the Board of Education with their third update on the high school design process at the regular meeting on Monday, May 13.
Michaud noted the District is halfway through the high school design process.
He noted one of the enjoyable aspects of the project has been the result of MCPASD deciding to stay with one large high school. He noted the District serves eight municipalities but that the high school is the "one common thread that connects everyone.''
EUA has focused on three pillars -- student, environment and community -- when considering design aspects for the addition and renovations. He said there a five drivers that lead the design for students: learning partnerships, learner-centered, engaged & empowered, collective efficacy and visible learning.
Michaud also said materials and colors used inside and outside the building should enhance the District's relationship with the environment. He noted EUA is well aware of the focus MCPASD has placed on sustainability and being a state leader with regards to environmental efforts.
"We want to make sure at the end of the day we are living up to your focus of being inclusive, innovative and inspiring,'' Michaud said.
Michaud noted where the overall site plan is now is very similar to what was designed months ago. He noted parts of the current building that will remain will undergo lots of renovation. He said more entrances will be available on the north end of the new addition with some parking moving to the northwest part of the site. There will be a new black box performing area along with an enhanced receiving area on the west side of building. There will be less renovation on the east side although the pool entrance will get a face-lift.
Finally, much of the current building on the south end will be torn down, although he noted a larger green space will be available along with more parking that will result in a net gain of more than 70 stalls on that end of the campus.
Frerichs noted one goal was to create a connection between the new north addition and the renovated south end of the building with multiple connections on multiple floors. She also said there will be a larger commons-cafeteria on the northeast end and smaller one in the southwest part of the building.
She explained the bus loop will be on the south end of the site, with parent drop-off on the north end. The south side of the building will also be the main drop off for after-school and evening activities.
CSCS will be one of multiple smaller learning communities and will be located on the north end of the building. CSCS will have its own entrance and will take up the entire first floor in that part of the building.
She noted a second round of staff interviews were held on Monday and will do more next week.
Michaud then reviewed some of the external drawings. He noted there is a special emphasis on designing the west end of the building as people enter from Lee Street. He showed images from a number of different vantage points and added this isn't the final design.
Michaud also briefly reviewed the construction timeline. The north addition will begin in the spring of 2020 and should be ready by August 2021, he said. He added work on the current building will begin in the summer of 2021 and be ready for the start of 2022-23 school year.
