Director of Elementary Learning Rainey Briggs and Director of Bilingual Services Mandi Sersch-Morstad shared information about the District's equity practices and did a shortened version of the presentation they did to the Internal Attendance Boundary Committee on April 29 at the Board of Education regular meeting on Monday, May 13.
They reviewed the MCPASD equity community agreements and highlighted No. 4, noting Board members might feel discomfort during this exercise.
Briggs then led the Board through the same exercise the boundary committee did. He shared an image of students that compared equality vs. equity and asked everyone to talk with someone about what the images meant. They added another image that showed reality and another discussion was held.
A 4-minute video, "What do we mean when we talk about equity?" was then shown. Finally, a fourth image of students titled, Liberation, was shown. Members noted there was no fence this time and all three students were on the field although they still weren't in the game.
Board members had concerns that the District won't be able to solve all of the challenges related to equity.
"We know we aren't going to fix it but we can do better,'' Sersch-Morstad said.
