Eleven District middle level students competed in the State MathCounts Competition in Sheboygan on Saturday, March 8.
The team from Kromrey placed first at that event, while eighth-grader Grace Wu advanced the the National MathCounts event by taking third overall as an individual.
State participates included Amogh Akella, Isha Chilukuri, Alexa Garber, Harry Jin, Roddy McLellan, Amritha Mavuri and Grace Wu from Kromrey and Luke Zhang, Kevin Wu, Nathan Kwon and Ian Lam from Glacier Creek.
Kromrey held a Battle of the Books event on Thursday, Feb. 13. The sixth-grade team of Harry Jin, Ryan Zhu, Owen Weisenberger and Ryan Slattery took first place in the middle division. The eighth-grade team of Thaddeus Arrington, Amritha Mavuri, Roddy McLellan and Alexa Garber took first place in the senior division.
The winning teams did an online competition with hundreds of teams from all over the state this week and the Kromrey middle division team placed third.
Students had to read 20 books during the fall and winter in teams to participate in Battle of the Books. Kromrey staff members Nanci Marshall and Bets Pilon, along with retired teacher Diane Boles, helped run the events.
Battle of the Books is sponsored by the Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association. The statewide Battle of the Books program is designed to promote a love of reading among students. It encourages students to read a variety of books and helps to expose students to different authors and genres.
WEMTA sponsors three division- - elementary, middle and senior. In MCPASD, middle level includes students in grades 5-7 and 8th-graders read the senior level books. The middle level participants read the Golden Archer nominated titles for the intermediate and junior high level plus 10 other titles that are determined by media specialists throughout the state. The senior division reading list aims to expose students to current award-winning literature. The list incorporates awards such as Golden Archer, Newbery, Printz, Siebert and others.
More than 130 MCPASD students in middle and high school qualified to attend the Future Problem Solvers State Bowl, which takes place April 23-25 in Green Lake.
FPS requires students to study a variety of topics and work to solve problems related to those topics in the future. They worked in February to complete the qualifying problem this year on the topic of "Gamification".
