Four MHS seniors -- Annie Browning, Charlotte Buck, Shreya Godishala and Grace Steinmetz -- were among only 102 students recognized by the Wisconsin Affiliate of the National Center for Women in Information Technology.
All four students were named Wisconsin Affiliate award winners. Fewer than 60 students across the state received that recognition. Godishala was also just of four Wisconsin students to receive honorable mention recognition at the national level.
MHS was the only high school in Dane County to have more than two students recognized.
"I am really proud of Shreya, Grace, Annie, and Charlotte,'' MHS computer science teacher Lori Hunt said. "They are all amazing young women who have done so much to inspire others. ... They inspire me every day.''
Godishala and Steinmetz have been running the non-profit CODE-CS, which aims to get young girls and under-represented minority students, involved in computer science-related fields, for the past four years. Browning has helped to facilitate the Hour of Code that takes place for a week every December and has worked on an Independent Study with Hunt in Artificial Intelligence. Bucks also helped out with the Hour of Code and also played a role in Project Boolean, the student-run, state-wide programming competition that MHS has run at UW-Madison the past few years.
It is the second consecutive year that Steinmetz, Godishala and Browning have been recognized as NCWIT affiliate winners for Wisconsin. Rachel Woody also received national honorable mention recognition from the NCWIT in 2018.
The students were scheduled to be recognized at an awards ceremony at the Milwaukee School of Engineering on May 3. However, this year's event has been canceled due to COVID-19.
The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is a non-profit community of more than 1,240 universities, companies, non-profits, and government organizations nationwide working to increase womxn’s participation in computing and technology. NCWIT equips change leaders with resources for taking action in recruiting, retaining, and advancing women from K–12 and higher education through industry and entrepreneurial careers.
