Eighteen District middle school students recently participated in a one-day clinic and afternoon recital with the Wisconsin Young Artist Honors Orchestra.
The students were nominated by orchestra teachers Kristen Flak and Nancy Kurr. Students attended one of two sessions held on March 16 at The Performing Arts Center of Wisconsin Rapids and March 23 at The Greenhill Center of the Arts on the UW-Whitewater campus.
Glacier Creek musicians included violinists Arya Girirajan, Hannah Machleidt, Sriya Mallannagari, Shreya Ramesh, and Emma Schlotthauer; violists Akshay Manna and Sanjana Vanukuri; and cellists Andrew Chen and Dhriti Prakash.
Kromrey musicians included violinists Rishika Kommuri, Thalia Madden, Ben McDonald, and Santiago Picasso-Gutierrez; violists Amelia Kydd and Ryan Slattery; cellists Joshua Lee and Ian McGinley; and bassist Eliza Orlikowski.
The WYAHO holds this event to “support and encourage the beginning level string player.” Students completing their first, second or third year of study with their instrument are eligible to participate, with their teacher’s nomination.
Students participated in the Allegro, Vivace, or Presto Orchestra, depending upon their level of proficiency with their instrument. Music professors conducting the clinics were assisted by students from the UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater campuses to instruct and conduct the middle school students.
