More than 230 students and 58 teams competed in the 18th annual Brain Bowl competition at Glacier Creek this week.

The week-long competition ended on Friday morning when the 8th-grade team of Sam Mikelsons, Owen Lamson, Sydney DeMartino and Julia Zeimentz narrowly beat the 7th-grade team of Grace LaBoda, Kyle Neuser, Meghna Datta and Sam Gessler before many of their peers in the school's gymnasium.

Brain Bowl is a timed, single-elimination trivia competition. Four-person teams compete against each other on such topics as literature, math, geography, languages, history and trivia.

The teams that made the semifinals were Steven Huang, Robert McPherson, Lauren Hurd and Ben Isaacs; and Kian Djamali, Jack Tibbetts, Nathan Trinkl and Ashley Holahan. The teams that advanced to the quarterfinals were Jack Mondi, Nate Burkard, Erik Stewart and Laura Stewart; Annie Diamond, Margaret Patterson, Emma Laufenberg and Jack Weiler; Eric Molina, Jacob Nichols-Jenson, Danny Molina and Michelle Colon; and Jason Yang, Eric Maier and Kyra Schlicht.

"There were so many strong teams this year,'' said Ruth Frawley, who helps coordinate the event and asked the questions for many of the rounds. "Congratulations to all our student participants and thanks to all the staff who helped!!''
