MHS Creative Writing students and Elm Lawn second-graders have been sharing letters, stories, and poems as part of a pen-pal exchange this semester.
The effort is coordinated by MHS English teacher Jen Mathison-Ohly and Elm Lawn's Annie White. Students met on Thursday, Jan. 10 to go over what they had produced and even did some writing together.
"The students had a lot of fun,'' said Mathison-Ohly, who noted she and White try to do it every couple of years. "It's a very worthwhile project.''
Second-graders and the high schoolers worked on audience, purpose, and perspective in their writings to each other, as well as creating stories and poems with their penpal as the main focus, Mathison-Ohly said.
"The students enjoyed meeting each other, and the second graders especially liked asking questions about what high school is like,'' she said.
