Elm Lawn students will sing and “sit in” with four professional jazz musicians in a series of concerts on Wednesday, May 27.
The professionals are Chris Wagoner, violin and vocals; Laurie Lang Croasdale, bass; Jim Huwe, drums; and Paul Hastil, piano.
These concerts and workshops are being funded through grants from the District’s Education Foundation and the Madison Jazz Society, along with funding from the Elm Lawn PTO.
Lisa Muench, a teacher in the District, and her husband, Paul, also made an additional donation so that two musicians can come the day before to do additional workshops with with the students.
All students will sing as a chorus. Some students also will have the opportunity to sing in the microphone or “sit in” with the band and improvise jazz solos on music instruments. The jazz originals and additional percussion and piano are being added by music teacher, John Becker. There will also be some parent guest artists from the Elm Lawn community sitting in as well as performers.
"It is a treat to bring in artists of this caliber to perform and work with our students, and a terrific way to engage our next generation of musicians with the art form of jazz,” Becker said. "Thanks to our Education Foundation, the Madison Jazz Society, our Elm Lawn PTO, and Lisa and Paul Muench for supporting jazz and world music education in our schools!''
