Powerful Planning: Integrating Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design

Instructors: Denise Herrmann and Nancy Wyngaard

In this course participants will develop skills and strategies needed to create powerful curriculum, instructional units, and quality assessments in a standards-dominated era and ensure academic success for the full spectrum of learners.

Based on the work of Carol Ann Tomlinson and Jay McTighe, participants will use the principles of backward design and differentiation together to craft lesson plans that will teach essential knowledge and skills for the full spectrum of learners.

  • Differentiated Instruction is predominantly an instructional design model that focuses on whom we teach, where we teach, and how we teach so that all learners – from our most challenged to our most advanced – can access and be challenged by our curriculum.
  • Understanding by Design is predominantly a curriculum design model that focuses on what we teach so that the curriculum and assessment designed by educators truly cultivates the understanding of their students.

This class will provide time to develop both a conceptual understanding of UBD and DI as well as apply these concepts while designing an instructional unit.  This would be an ideal co-planning opportunity for teams, but all interested educators are welcome.  Participants need to bring an idea for a new unit or a current unit that you would like to re-design.
